Nature and Humanity

This paper is my personal view of nature conservation, so I thought that I should begin by introducing myself:
 
My passion for conservation began as a 13 year old boy when I was taken by a schoolteacher on a day visit to Skomer Island NNR. It proved to be a life-changing revelation. Although I had no idea what being a Warden meant, by the end of that day I had decided that I was going to be the island’s Warden. With that goal in mind, I worked as Warden or Assistant Warden on various reserves in Britain and Canada, including the islands of Skokholm and the Calf of Man. Eventually, my boyhood dream was realised in 1976 when I became Warden of Skomer. The ten years that I spent on the island confirmed and consolidated everything I had ever believed about the importance of conservation....
