Bryher (poem)
Because I cannot hope to parry time
I cannot merely hope,
Yet here upon the wind-waved heath
The moment lingers far,
From petty history to now,
Beyond and back again.
Because I cannot live within this time
I cannot simply live,
But here upon the white-sand dunes
Soft footfalls tarry deep,
Imposing history on now,
Beyond and back again.
Because I cannot be outside of time
I cannot only be,
Time has no aims but runs alone
As pointless as the waves
That endless pull upon some shore,
Beyond and back again.
